Herod the Great came from Idumea, a mixed Semitic race south of Judea.  In 41 BC he moved in to Judea and quickly established himself as a friend of the Romans.

Judea's GNP was religion; otherwise it was a very poor place.  He converted to Judaism and moved into what today is known as Multi-Level Marketing ("MLM").

bulletHe stood up to Cleopatra who tried to seduce him in Jericho.'
bulletHe sided with Augustus Caesar when she and Mark Anthony were defeated in the battle of Actium

His reign lasted from 37BC to 4 BC.

bulletHe rebuilt the temple in Jerusalem
bulletBuilt an army and fleet
bulletFortified the harbour at Caesarea
bulletHe had nine wives

However, he became paranoid towards the end of his reign over his succession and, charming chap, killed his two sons by his second and favourite wife and killed his son, Antipater, by his first wife.  In this frame of mind, he wasn't too happy to hear that a new king  of the Jews (of the David line), Jesus, was about to be born and set to kill him too.  However, he was misled (lied to) about the birth of Jesus by date and by venue.
